14th May 2026, Chongwe District Media Initiative for Women in Zambia ( MIWOZ) Coordinator for Chongwe district Mildred Chuumbwe joined aspiring candidates and key stakeholders at the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) stakeholders’ briefing on the electoral processes in Chongwe District ahead of the 2026 General Elections.
The meeting brought together aspiring Members of Parliament, mayoral candidates, councillors, independent candidates and other organisations involved in the electoral process. The briefing aimed at helping stakeholders better understand the nomination process and other key electoral requirements.
During the meeting, ECZ officials guided participants on important nomination requirements, including the need for a valid Grade 12 certificate, payment of nomination fees and accreditation procedures for key participants such as the media.
Stakeholders also learnt that aspiring candidates in the 2026 elections will be required to sign affidavits declaring their assets as part of the nomination process.
Notably, only 12 aspiring female candidates attended the meeting highlighting the continued need to encourage greater participation of women in leadership and decision-making positions.
Among the female parliamentary aspirants present were Bernadette Deka Zulu for Chongwe West, Anita Kamanga for Chongwe East and Princess Cholwe Nkomeshya for Chongwe West.
Others aspiring for leadership positions included mayoral hopefuls Ivy Musopelo, Victoria Nkomeshya and Shamiso Makumbiro, alongside six aspiring female councillors from different wards across Chongwe East and Chongwe West constituencies.
The meeting marked an important step in preparing stakeholders for a transparent, informed and credible electoral process ahead of the 2026 elections
